It was presented to the public at the Leipzig Spring Fair in 1949 and built from mid-1950 to 1956 at the VEB Kraftfahrzeugwerk HORCH in Zwickau, initially as a platform truck. The H3A was a completely new development in its design as a long-hood truck with a diesel engine. The development of the diesel engine goes back to a VOMAG development for the Leipzig Spring Fair, the H3A appeared as a tractor unit with tank semi-trailer, other variants such as three-way tipper, livestock transporter, road tractor, tanker and with special bodies for the post office and DRK, as well as a furniture van. Around 180 H3B front-wheel-drive buses were produced at the LOWA plant in Bautzen on the basis of the H3A chassis.
